Classic Car News: Pinnacle Of Porsche

The Porsche 911 has been modified many times over its lifespan to suit the current markets and to satisfy the demands of its customers.  The classic 911 is said to have been developed as a much more powerful, larger more comfortable replacement for the 356 – the company’s first model, and has gone on to be the most successful model created by the famous marque.

Every classic car can be traced back to its roots and for the 911 this goes as far back as the original sketches drawn by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche in 1959. The 911 Carrera RS are considered by many to be the greatest classic 911′s of all time and are highly regarded among collectors.

When a New Car is born there is always high hopes, but Porsche’s first six-cylinder production car has surpassed all expectations and long lived into a new millennium.  Every year newer, shinier, faster cars hit the roads and the headlines promising better performance than the last, and the Porsche is no exception.

The 911 GT1 was designed and developed in 1996 for the purpose of competing in the GT1 Le Mans racing class. This particular model even gave the McLaren F1 GTR’s a run for their money on the race track and in 1998 went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

According to PistonHeads.com, Porsche has released pictures of the new 911 Carrera GTS ahead of the big reveal at the Paris Motor Show next month. Porsche says, “the new Carrera ascends to the pinnacle of the Carrera model series, with a power output of 408hp, outstanding vehicle dynamics and a specification” that emphasises the character of the iconic classic coupe.

This model comes as a ‘last hurrah’ before the 997-series arrives next year and attempts to park in the rather large shoes of the 911.

Is It News $11.02 Considering that it took Texas drummer and singer/songwriter Doyle Bramhall’s 12 years to issue his debut album, 1994′s Bird Nest on the Ground and that nine years passed before his sophomore effort, Fitchburg Street, dropped, his third set, arriving only four years after its predecessor, is quick work. Bramhall is a bit of a living legend in Texas music circles. He’s worked with everyone from Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to Marcia Ball and Mason Ruffner to Jennifer Warnes — and a whole lot of others. Is It News was co produced by songwriting guitar slinger C.C. Adcock and Bramhall and recorded in five locations from Minnesota to Los Angeles to Austin to New Orleans. Bramhall wrote or co-wrote everything on the set, including “Chateu Strut” with Stevie Ray. The cast of players here is also impressive. It includes everyone from his co-producer and Jimmie Vaughan to his son Doyle II to Denny Freeman, Jason Burns, Billy Etheridge, Jimmy Mac, and Matt Perrine, just to name a few. That doesn’t make it a cluttered effort, however, and Is It News feels all of a piece. The music, rooted in blues and Texas-style R&B, comes roaring out of the gate, but it’s not simply some boogie bar-band effort. By the standards of his other records, this is downright slick and better for it. There is real variety in the tunes here. “Lost in the Congo” is Bo Diddley by way of New Orleans funk and swamp rock with a smokin’ little guitar solo by Mato Nanji and slide work by Mike Keller. But Freeman and Adcock also play guitar here, and it’s one dense, spooky rock number. The title track has a little more Texas swagger in its backside, a bluesy broken love song with great production and backing vocals. The mix is really warm and inviting and Bramhall’s singing is at its very best. The swamp sound returns but the vibe is different, Texas soul. Speaking of soul, “I’ll Taker You Away,” with its big reverb, warm wall of guitars, and Bramhall’s B-3 work, is a smoking plea for forgiveness. “Big” features the huge nasty blues-rock that made his other records so popular with I-IV-V beatheads, but Bramhall and Adcock are talking enormous here. They listened to a lot of Diddley records to get these guitar sounds and the drums. Their sound can be likened as popping up through the floor of the apartment downstairs and knock dishes off your table. It’s enormous, noisy, and nasty. “Ooh Wee Baby” is a slowish love song, but made for the dancefloor. It’s got all this country-styled production in it, but the sound is something from the ’50s, all innocent and soulful like the best in rhythm and blues. The humorous “Top Rank Boxing” has the swamp shuffle happening, but the canned handclap sound on it would have been better left out of the mix. Also, “That Day,” an acoustic number that sounds like an elegy to S.R.V., just doesn’t fit here, especially so near the end of the set. New Used Car $5.92 Sue Foley pretty much sticks to her guns on New Used Car — her tenth album and second for Germany’s Ruf Records — resisting the urge to go pure pop and turning out instead another set of blues-inflected roots rock originals that prominently feature her laser-guided electric guitar leads. This is certainly good news, and things get off to a great start with the spunky opener and title tune “New Used Car,” which cooks along on Foley’s guitar and sharp lyrics that are fully aware that a car is just a metaphor for getting where you want to go and that the back seat is full of all the baggage a life brings. Unfortunately the opening momentum drops off quickly here, and the thinness of Foley’s voice becomes obvious on much of what follows, which wouldn’t really be a problem if the songs, all but one of which are Foley originals, were just a little bit better. “Sugar” has a nice, saucy feel, and the closing track, the closest thing to a straight blues on New Used Car, “Change Your Mind,” is impressive, even if it is essentially a rewrite of the old folk-blues nugget “Baby Let Me Follow You Down.” The one song Foley didn’t have a hand in writing here, Terry Gillespie’s “When I Come Back to Ya,” is also arresting, and Foley’s just-slightly-shaky vocal adds real dimension to the song. Elsewhere, though, the songs feel not quite whole, and although Foley’s guitar playing is everywhere excellent and features her trademark biting tone, she just isn’t a strong enough singer to carry weaker material. Don’t count her out, though. Foley has a real vulnerability in her voice that she spends most of her time writing away from, and when she figures out how to write toward it, the real strength of this remarkable musician should emerge. Lord knows she can play guitar with the best of them. She just needs to figure out how to write the songs that only she could have written. The music is cool, hot, emotional, creative, and personal and comes across as being played by a much larger ensemble than credited. “Enough Enough,” the first song on the CD, is introduced by dynamic horn charts that announce the exemplary alto sax soloing and improvisations that Ehrlich plans to unleash. The chord changes, comping rhythms are fearless as is Ehrlich’s technical acuity. On “Hear You Say,” at the head, a palette of horn voices are underlined by the earthier groove orientation of Howard Johnson’s tuba. Ehrlich’s alto sax solo, James Zollar’s trumpet talk and electronic textures from James Weidman’s melodia makes this song one of the funkiest tunes on the set. “News On The Rail,” opens with a bass solo by Greg Cohen. Ehrlich, who is playing clarinet continues on his eclectic approach with tuba and melodia comps under his free-wheeling riffs. This song is loaded with doses of unconventional sounds and unique instrumental pairings. “Seeker’s Delight” features the energy, control and extraordinary musicality of this ensemble. The soloing is adept and entertaining. Again, Marty Ehrlich scores major points for originality, creative jazz voicings, and for music that urges you to get jazzed.
