Black Book Car Values Canada

I’m thinking to buy a 2004 Subaru Legacy Wagon for $ 9,950. Where online is there info on the true value ?

Preferably, since I live in the Quebec province of Canada, I need to know the local value of this car. I heard of an Auto Hebdo magazine but my PC was having problems getting to it. It just had the timing belt changed on it, and has approximately 80,000 kms on it. No rust or damage. What is some of the other criteria that determines the true value of the car ? I think its the “black Book” that gives the dealers price and the Red Book that gives the consumers fair price.

You might try using one of the US sites, and just picking a location in Maine or Vermont. Since the exchange rate is pretty close to 1 right now, the prices should be fairly useful.

For example a 2004 Legacy Wagon with 50,000 miles in Jackman, ME 04945 would be worth about $11,000 USD on nadaguides.com

Animal Welfare and Human Values

Animal Welfare and Human Values

$40.78

As the most populous province in Canada, Ontario is a microcosm of the animal welfare issues which beset Western civilization. The authors of this book, chairman and vicechairman, respectively, of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, find themselves constantly being made aware of the atrocities committed in the Societys jurisdiction. They have been, in turn, puzzled, exasperated and horrified at humanitys cruelty to our fellow sentient beings. The issues discussed in this book are the most contentious in animal welfare disputes animal experimentation, furfarming and trapping, the use of animals for human entertainment and the conditions under which animals are raised for human consumption. They are complex issues and should be thought about fairly and seriously. The authors, standing squarely on the side of the animals, suggest community and belonging as concepts through which to understand our relationships to other species. They ground their ideas in Wordsworths primal sympathy and Jungs unconscious identity with the animal realm. The philosophy developed in this book embraces common sense and compromise as the surest paths to the goal of animal welfare. It requires respect and consideration for other species while acknowledging our primary obligations to our fellow humans. Race, Incarceration, and American Values

Race, Incarceration, and American Values

$7.3

The United States, home to five percent of the worlds’ population, now houses twenty-five percent of the world’s prison inmates. Our incarceration rate–at 714 per 100,000 residents and rising–is almost forty percent greater than our nearest competitors (the Bahamas, Belarus, and Russia). More pointedly, it is 6.2 times the Canadian rate and 12.3 times the rate in Japan. Economist Glenn Loury argues that this extraordinary mass incarceration is not a response to rising crime rates or a proud success of social policy. Instead, it is the product of a generation-old collective decision to become a more punitive society. He connects this policy to our history of racial oppression, showing that the punitive turn in American politics and culture emerged in the post-civil rights years and has today become the main vehicle for the reproduction of racial hierarchies. Whatever the explanation, Loury agues, the uncontroversial fact is that changes in our criminal justice system since the 1970s have created a nether class of Americans–vastly disproportionately black and brown–with severely restricted rights and life chances. Moreover, conservatives and liberals agree that the growth in our prison population has long passed the point of diminishing returns. Stigmatizing and confining of a large segment of our population should be unacceptable to Americans. Loury’s call to action makes all of us now responsible for ensuring that the policy changes. Praise for "The Anatomy of Racial Inequality: " "Intellectually rigorous and deeply thoughtful…. "The Anatomy of Racial Inequality" is an incisive, erudite book by a major thinker." –Gerald Early, "New York Times Book Review" "A Boston Review Book"

The Genesis of Values

The Genesis of Values

$35.87

One of the most important issues in public and academic debate is the concept of value and the difficulty in defining it. In this new book, the leading social theorist Hans Joas explores the nature of values in relation to some of the leading figures of twentieth-century philosophy and social theory. Seeking to synthesize utilitarian and normativist approaches, Joas argues that only by appreciating the creative nature of human action can we understand how values and value commitments arise. Values, Joas suggests, arise in experiences of self-formation and self-transcendence. He arrives at this thesis by tracing the tensions in the work of thinkers including Friedrich Nietzsche, William James, Max Scheler and John Dewey. He goes on to explore the work of Charles Taylor, and concludes with an examination of postmodern challenges to the concept of identity and with a provocative critique of Habermas’s treatment of the relation between the right and the good. Throughout the book, Joas differentiates between values, norms and desires. He clarifies their respective role in the dynamics of human action, and explores how the ways we acquire values relate to the other ways in which we understand the world and ourselves. This important book will be of great interest to students and scholars of sociology, social theory and philosophy.

Values of the Game

Values of the Game

$3.95

As the Presidential run heats up with the start of the primary season in New Hampshire on February 2, the attention to the candidates and their issues will become even more intense. Values of the Game is an ideal book to understand Bill Bradley, the man and the candidate. The values that Bill speaks of so frequently during his campaign speeches are reflected in Values of the Game–responsibility, discipline, passion, selflessness and respect. Bill Bradley, candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination for 2000, former U.S. senator from New Jersey from 1979 to 1997, and a member of two championship New York Knicks teams, returns to the scene of his first career and his first great passion, basketball. Things have changed since Bradley’s championship days, but what separates winners and losers remains very much the same: No collection of players, no matter how good, can win unless they form a team. And no team can succeed unless it shares common values, among them courage, discipline, resilience, respect, and an unmitigated passion for the game. In this highly acclaimed and bestselling book, Bill Bradley offers his vision for how the principles he developed playing basketball can be applied to everyday life, be it at the office, at home, in public life–indeed, in any situation where values matter. In ten essays, filled with intensely personal observations and reflections, Bradley revisits the basketball court with the fire of the competitor and the eye of the writer and explores these qualities in action: the dynamics of teammates on the court and off, the individual courage to risk the last-second shot, the responsibility to teammates, coaches, and fans to stay in shape, play hard, and honor the game. Values of the Game is one man’s vision for a better world, and is a lasting statement of principle and commitment from one of our country’s finest leaders.

The Values of Precision

The Values of Precision

$34.43

"The Values of Precision" examines how exactitude has come to occupy such a prominent place in Western culture. What has been the value of numerical values? Beginning with the late eighteenth century and continuing into the twentieth, the essays in this volume support the view that centralizing states–with their increasingly widespread bureaucracies for managing trade, taxation, and armies–and large-scale commercial enterprises–with their requirements for standardization and mass production–have been the major promoters of numerical precision. Taking advantage of the resources available, scientists and engineers have entered a symbiotic relationship with state and industry, which in turn has led to increasingly refined measures in ever-widening domains of the natural and social world. At the heart of this book, therefore, is an inquiry into the capacity of numbers and instruments to travel across boundaries of culture and materials. Many of the papers focus attention on disagreements about the significance and the credibility of particular sorts of measurements deployed to support particular claims, as in the measures of the population of France, the electrical resistance of copper, or the solvency of insurance companies. At the same time they display the deeply cultural character of precision values. Contributors to the volume include Ken Alder, Graeme J. N. Gooday, Jan Golinski, Frederic L. Holmes, Kathryn M. Olesko, Theodore M. Porter, Andrea Rusnock, Simon Schaffer, George Sweetnam, Andrew Warwick, and M. Norton Wise.

Environmental Values

Environmental Values

$37.86

We live in a world confronted by mounting environmental problems. We read of increasing global deforestation and desertification, loss of species diversity, pollution and global warming. In everyday life people mourn the loss of valued landscapes and urban spaces. Underlying these problems are conflicting priorities and values. Yet dominant approaches to policy making seem ill-equipped to capture the various ways in which the environment matters to us. Environmental Values introduces readers to these issues by presenting, and then challenging, two dominant approaches to environmental decision-making, one from environmental economics, the other from environmental philosophy. The authors present a sustained case for questioning the underlying ethical theories of both of these traditions. They defend a pluralistic alternative rooted in the rich everyday relations of humans to the environments they inhabit, providing a path for integrating human needs with environmental protection through an understanding of the narrative and history of particular places. The book examines the implications of this approach for policy issues such as biodiversity conservation and sustainability. The book is written in a clear and accessible style for an interdisciplinary audience. It will be ideal for student use in environmental courses in geography, economics, philosophy, politics and sociology. It will also be of wider interest to policy makers and the concerned general reader.
